2012 Berkshire Idol Finals

PITTSFIELD - On Saturday, May 12, the finals of the 2012 Berkshire Idol will be held at Barrington Stage Company.

This year's finals will feature live audience voting following each contestant's performance.

there will be speacial performances from last years winners.

All proceeds go to benefit the Family Life Support Center.

Tugboat URGER returns as floating classroom

The Tugboat URGER has returned to Waterford as a floating classroom for this week.

On Friday, May 11 the URGER hosted fourth grade students from Orena Elementary School at Lock E-2 on the Erie Canal in Waterford. The tugboat opened its current classroom season earlier this week with stops in Whitehall and Schuylerville on the Champlain Canal.

"The URGER brings history to life again along the canal. Thousands of fourth grade students will come aboard this year to learn about their heritage and the importance of protecting our precious natural resources,” said Brian U. Stratton, director of the New York State Canal Corporation.

This year, the URGER is under the command of a new skipper, Captain Wendy Marble. She has nearly 25 years of experience on New York’s Canals and other adjacent waterways and has worked on educational vessels at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City and the HMS Rose Foundation in Bridgeport, Conn.

Clown Train to stop at Center for Disability services

ALBANY - The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus' clown train will make a stop at the Langan Center and Clover Patch Preschool.

Circus performers will interact with the pupils and every child will recieve a red clown nose.

The stop will occur on Wednesday, April 25, from 10-10:30a.

Child Care available for Memphis shows

SCHENECTADY - Having trouble finding a sitter to watch the little ones so you can enjoy a Tony Award winning musical? A new program from Proctors and the Schenectady Branch of the Capital District YMCA hopes to end that.

YMCA Parents Night Out is a convenient, affordable, and safe solution. Through the program parents can sign up for childcare at the new Downtown Y while they attend events at Proctors State Street Complex.

NYS Police to conduct Free Child Passenger Safety Check

The New York State Police will conduct a Free Child Passenger Safety Check on Tuesday, April 24 at the New York State Police barracks in Loundonville.

A New York State Trooper who is also a certified child passenger technician will install and/or inspect car seats to make sure they are installed properly.

Citizens Bank seeks student applicants for scholarship program

ALBANY - Applications for the Citizens Bank's TruFit Good Citizen Student Scholarship program are now being accepted.

Last year, the scholarship program awarded a total of $50,000 to college students whose volunteer efforts made a difference in their communities.

This year, 40 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors and current college students across the country who have been active in community service.

Applicants are asked to write an essay of no more than 250 words or record a 60-second video summing up their responsibility and leadership skills gained through community service experiences.

The scholarships will be awarded this summer for the 2012-2013 academic year.

14th Annual Mother of the Year Contest

ALBANY - The City of Albany and St. Peters Health Partners are announcing the 14th annual Mother of the Year Contest, celebrating Capital Region moms who have demonstrates a tremendous commitment to their family and who have made a positive impact on their children and loved ones.

Mayor Jerry Jennings will greet the five finalists and crown one of them on stage at this years Tulip Festival in Washington Park.
