Ernie Williams passes away Wednesday afternoon | People
COHOES – Local blues legend Ernie Williams passed away Wednesday afternoon. He was rushed to Albany Medical Center Wednesday morning. Sources tell NewsChannel 13 he suffered not only a heart attack, but also a massive cranial bleed.
Williams, 87, has been the face and voice of the Capital Region blues scene for more than 40 years. Slowing down recently, it was a rare celebration -- especially a Price Chopper event -- he wouldn’t headline.
Growing up picking tobacco in Virginia, Williams moved to Harlem with only a guitar and $9. That’s where he met his hero B.B. King.
But only when he moved to Albany in the 1970s and formed his own band did he make a mark.
