Legislation introduced to create animal abuser registry in Albany County

Legislation introduced to create animal abuser registry in Albany County

Albany Legislator Bryan Clenahan is introducing a legislation to create a registry of convicted animal abusers in Albany County.

Clenahan said that the first registry of the type was established in Suffolk County last year and that Albany hopes to continue the trend in cracking down on animal abuse.

“Animal abuse is completely unacceptable and we cannot tolerate it,” Clenahan said in a statement.  “No one convicted of an animal abuse crime should be allowed to bring another animal into their home for years.  And no one who is convicted of abusing an animal a second time should be allowed to have a pet ever again.”

Clenahan was also inspired by the recent case involving Oliver, a beautiful Great Dane mix in Schenectady that was brutally beaten earlier this year.  With lots of help from the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society staff, Oliver has made amazing progress toward physical and emotional recovery over the past several months.

Two Albany County officials out of jobs

ALBANY, N.Y. - Two more officials with the Albany County Sheriff's Department are out of a job amid a residency probe.

The Victims’ Coordinator for the County Stop DWI Program, Erin Loffredo, has been fired.  Acting sheriff, Craig Apple tells WNYT Loffredo was let go because she was using a fraudulent address that showed she lived in Albany County.  In order to hold that job, she was required to live in the county. Loffredo's former supervisor, Lenoard Crouch, was also let go in July.

Another sheriff's employee, John Curry, abruptly resigned over the weekend.

Tips to keep your pets safe this 4th of July

The Humane Society of the United States is reminding Americans that our beloved pets can become distressed by the additional noise and commotion involved with the Independence Day holiday.

In fact, the Humane Society says animal shelters across the country are accustomed to receiving "July 4th" dogs—dogs who run off during fireworks celebrations and are rescued by animal control officers or good Samaritans who take them to the safety of a local shelter.

"Pets are family members, and it's understandable that people want to include them in their holiday plans," said Adam Goldfarb, director of the Pets at Risk program for The HSUS in a statement. "However, most pets will be more comfortable staying at home. Spare our furry friends the stress of fireworks, crowds and fanfare on the Fourth of July, and for everyone, we wish you a safe and fun Independence Day."
