Schumer says raising interest rate unacceptable

If congress doesn't act, the interest rate for Stafford loans will double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

New York’s senior senator, Chuck Schumer says that's unacceptable.

Schumer is pushing for legislation extending the 3.4 percent rate for one year and hopes to make it permanent.

A vote on the issue is scheduled in the house on Friday.

Local students to take part in nationwide anti-bullying rally

HUDSON - On Friday, May 4, students in Hudson will join thousands of others across the country to take a stand against bullying.

The Group Stand4Change.org is organizing a rally to bring attention to the problem of bullying.

Construction Career Day

GLENMONT - On April 25-26, high school students from around the region will take part in the 11th Annual Capital District Construction Career Day, a two day hands on event designed to introduce youth to the many opportunities available in the construction industry.

The event will be attended my professionals from over 30 local companies, state agencies, and labor organizations.

The construction industry is on the rebound in New York State, and the Governor has recogized the importance of investing in New York's infrastructure which will put people back to work.

The event will be at Tri-Cities Laborers Training Facility in Glenmont.

Cohoes Spring Clean-up and Electronic Recycling Day

COHOES – The City of Cohoes will be hosting a Spring Clean-up and Electronic Recycling Day in Lansing Park on May 20.

Also on that day, the Van Schaick fifth grade class will holding a bottle and can drive. The proceeds of the bottle and can drive will benefit their end of the year field trip.

Proof of residence status will be required.

All passenger vehicles will be allowed in at no cost. Pick-up trucks, vehicles with trailers and U-Haul’s will be charged an additional fee.

Citizens Bank seeks student applicants for scholarship program

ALBANY - Applications for the Citizens Bank's TruFit Good Citizen Student Scholarship program are now being accepted.

Last year, the scholarship program awarded a total of $50,000 to college students whose volunteer efforts made a difference in their communities.

This year, 40 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors and current college students across the country who have been active in community service.

Applicants are asked to write an essay of no more than 250 words or record a 60-second video summing up their responsibility and leadership skills gained through community service experiences.

The scholarships will be awarded this summer for the 2012-2013 academic year.

CHS presenting The Unusual Suspects

COHOES - The Cohoes High School Drama Dept. is presenting the play The Unusual Suspects on March 29, March 30 and March 31, 2012, beginning at 7 p.m. each evening in the Cohoes High School auditorium.  Admission is $5 per person.
 
One crime. Four high school students. And one angry principal. This hilariously action-packed comedy caper unites four unlikely students who may not have a lot in common on the surface. But they do share one thing -- utter animosity towards the man who's haunted their high school years. Will they get their revenge?
 
Come and see these wonderful high school students perform a comedy that is both a current and reminiscent look at those high school years.

Cohoes Teachers Association delivers letter

COHOES - Representatives from the Cohoes Teachers Association are going to hand deliver letters on Tuesday, March 20, in an attempt to recover some funding needed to avoid massive lay-offs. They will be delkivering them to local legislators in an attempt to gain support from them.

Cohoes currently faces a $2.1 million budget gap for next year.
