Agencies issue summer driving safety tips

ALBANY – New York State Police, New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and the New York State Thruway Authority are reminding drivers of the dangers that come with nice weather.

Deer become more active during the months of May and June and are seen on most roadways in the state.

To prevent a collision with a deer drivers are asked to be alert, especially in the morning and evening, scan roadsides, and remember that deer travel in groups.

They are also issuing a reminder about motorcycles. With nice weather some of the nearly 700,000 registered motorcycles will be on our roads and highways.

Some safety tips are to always allow a motorcycle use of a full lane, look twice or even three times in all mirrors and blind spots, don’t tailgate and always signal.

Siena, CDTA make deal for student rides

LOUDONVILLE - For Siena College, its students and CDTA, it's win-win-win, "especially those who are struggling to find transportation to school, internships and jobs and to commuters who are happy to save a little money on gas," said Siena student Cassy Jane Werking.

For a flat fee paid to CDTA by the college, Siena students can swipe their IDs in the fare box and ride without paying the usual $1.50.

The deal is good anywhere CDTA goes at any time.

The bus company is also increasing service on Route 9 connecting the campus with downtown Albany and Latham.

"Our students really need greater access to the whole Capital Region and what better way to do it than public transportation?" asked the Rev. Kevin Mullin, Siena College president.

CDTA sees several benefits in the arrangement, similar to deals it has already made with six other area colleges and universities.

Annual run to cause several traffic detours

WATERVLIET – The annual Arsenal City Run will be held on Friday Sept. 21, and will cause traffic detours around the city.

All North and Southbound traffic will be rerouted around the City using 1st Street to Lincoln Ave in the South end and 2nd Ave to Rt. 155 to Lincoln Ave in the north end of the city from 5:00 PM to approximately 7:00 PM.

Route 32 and Broadway north and southbound will be closed to through traffic and limited local traffic flow during the race events.

CDTA has been notified and will make adjustments to their routes during this time.

CDTA customers are encouraged to check for rerouting instructions at www.CDTA.org.  Questions regarding traffic patterns/detours should be directed to the Police Department at 270-3833.

1 lane re-open on I-87's northbound 2 lanes remain closed at Twin Bridges

COLONIE - One of the northbound lanes of the area's main north-south interstate highway has reopened, but the other two remain closed because of delays at a bridge renovation project.

The state Department of Transportation says the left lane on the bridge carrying Interstate 87, the Adirondack Northway, over the Mohawk river reopened around noon Monday. The center and right lanes on Thaddeus Kosciuszko  Bridge have been closed since before 6 a.m.

DOT officials say the closure was caused by delays in securing the old bridge deck with steel plates. There's no indication when the other lanes would reopen.

Northbound traffic is being diverted off the highway to nearby Route 9.

A $29 million project to replace the bridge's decking began this past weekend on the span's northbound side.
